Why do people keep falling over? They should use Titanium Buff, it's the most useful colour for mixing and is pretty nice on its own too.

SLABS 031 - Meschi 'The Dwelling Place'

We've been listening to Meschi's mysteriously titled mixes for a while now. The mix he has done for us is exactly what we've come to expect from him, carefully chosen, dreamy, abstract and robotic selections. This mix is called 'The Dwelling Place'.

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!

Slabs of the Tabernacle 008 @ The Twisted Wheel

with FANCY & SPOOK [LIVE] + RESIDENTS

Fancy & Spook are no stranger to these parts by now but we wanted to wait until it got cold before we put them on.

Live, fast, analogue electro from the guests with complementary techno and electro sets from the residents. Are you sitting comfortably...

Fancy & Spook are Gavin Hughes & John Davis. Originally from Northern Ireland, they have been living in Glasgow since 2000 and are now part of the thriving electronic music scene based around the city’s Rub-A-Dub Records.

Inspired by a love of all things analogue and constant exposure to the best of international electronic music at clubs like Test, Club 69, and Monox they have developed a tough yet playful take on the classic electro-techno sound.

In late 2005 they set up Heatray Records, with fellow Glasgow artist Craig Bell (aka Ditone) and released the “We Had The Technology” EP in April 2006.

The Detroit influenced electro of that 12” received the Dave Clarke seal of approval, making the Top 10 on www.daveclarke.com for April 2006, and earned comparisons with
Detroit legends Aux 88 and Drexciya.

However, 2008's “Extended Peril” EP sees their sound come closer to home with British bleeps, bass and bounce coming to the fore. On top of a solid 808 foundation, the influences range from the minimal melodies of Sheffield Techno and the metallic bass mastery of Neil Landstrumm to the eccentric electronics of the J Saul Kane’s Octagon Man project and analogue terrorists Add (N) to X

They specialise in live performance, taking an MPC full of home-made loops and as much of their analogue gear as they can carry to thoroughly road-test their sounds. They have supported J Saul Kane, 808 State, Dynarec, and Cursor Miner and have played out locally alongside fellow analogue fiends Marco Bernardi and the Sleepless Crew.

SLABS 030 - Don O'Kane

Moving swiftly onto our next mix which comes from Basic Aly (or Don O'Kane as the taxman calls him). We asked him to get a mix to us after hearing some of his previous endeavours and he promptly came back to us with this stunner.

He'll be joining Ali Renault on the 3rd January for our first night of the New Year.

With our November date just around the corner we thought we'd keep you interested with a chunky biography of our guest (so far)...

Co Owner of the Mighty Robot Recordings and Autodiscotheque record labels, Scotland's iamelectron (aka Dave Bowie) has had a love of synths and drum machines since his early teens. An ever expanding vinyl collection led to him kicking off his DJ'ing career in the late 80's/early 90's playing an eclectic mix of New Beat, 'Balearic' sounds, Chicago House and early techno at riotous house parties and clubs in the East of Scotland.

A desire to 'do it somewhere else' led to a move to Toronto in the mid 90's where iamelectron joined up with the Switch Records and Blue organisations. Along with Himadri (aka Teste), Jeremy Caulfield (Dumb-Unit), Adam Marshall (Nu Kanada) and Jeff Milligan (Revolver) the group gigged across North America at an exciting time when Canada's electronic music scene was beginning to evolve and gain recognition from the rest of the world. iamelectron's first experience in live radio happened at this time too when he became the co-host of the Switch Radio Show on Toronto's CKLN 88.1:

"There's nothing better than playing records through North American FM compression - a truly unique sound. I used the show to push the early Bunker/Interr-ferenc/Reference records that I was getting shipped from the UK, and the resurgence of British/Euro electro. It was a great experience and a superb chance to promote a sound that I was (and still am) extremely passionate about."

After returning to Scotland, iamelectron co ran the M*A*R*S, Magic Mix and Computer Love nights before going it alone in 1998 with Electron (hence the DJ name) in Dundee, pushing electro sounds with regular monthly support from Andrew Weatherall and weekly guests like Keith Tucker (Puzzlebox) and SCSI AV's Daz Quale.

A meeting of minds in 2003 led to the birth of Mighty Robot Recordings, a label that's received major props from I-F, Rob Da Bank (the second Ra-X 'Opium Den' installment was given an exclusive Radio 1 live session), Weatherall, Dave Clarke, JD Twitch, Laurent Garnier, Vice Magazine and a host of key underground DJs. Artist like the aforementioned Ra-X, Rude 66, Sneak Thief, Freak Electrique, Gladio/Legowelt, English Electric, Imatran Voima, Glasgow's Dirty Hospital and Chicago's Junior Rafael have all appeared on the label and after ten releases it's built a dedicated fan base.

Autodisco was launched in 2007 with Barry 'Dicky Trisco' Reeves (Deep Freeze Recordings/Disco Deviance) as an outlet for the two artists to share their love of disco, electrofunk and house. Now into its second year the night has become a great success with an impressive list of past and future guests. It's also led to studio productions - as the Autodisco DJs - and yet another record label - Autodiscotheque. This year saw the Autodisco DJs join the Rizla Invisible Players at Rockness and East Village as well as gigs across Europe, and from 2009 Autodisco will open for business in London with two new members; Richard Sen and Pete Herbert.

iamelectron's DJ'ing style is heavily influenced by the Hot Mix 5 and their tight, fast mixing technique. Expect everything from early 80's disco, italo, Chicago jack tracks, techno, Dutch electro(nix), 'nu' stuff and a bit of synth pop thrown in for good measure.

So there you have it! Here are a couple of mixes for you to digest as well.

"I have lived 300 years, and long to die. But death is no longer possible, I am immortal. I present now my story - full of mystery and intrigue. Rich in irony, and most satirical. It is set deep within a possible future, so none of these events have yet occurred. But they may! Be warned, lest you end as I. In this tale I am a fake god by occupation, and a magician by inclination. Merlin is my hero! I am the puppet master. I manipulate many of the characters and events you will see. But I am invented too for your entertainment and amusement.

Glasgow Tache

Thanks to Mark for bringing across such a fine selection of records and absolutely tearing it up on Saturday night. We’re all just a smidgen gutted that we never managed to record the set…this was musically up there as the best night we’ve had at Slabs of the Tabernacle, everything we'd hoped for and more!

Sunday’s all day tache party was thoroughly enjoyable too, beginning with a wet & warm disco set from the Nick the Greek, followed by another Italo masterclass from Brighton bad boy Casionova, and then over to Mark to finish off the night to a wee crowd all up and dancing to an hour of the finest space disco in town (with glittering disco ball and smoke machine in full effect)... was the perfect end to a lovely weekend.

The next night we have planned is the "Residents Party" on the first Saturday in October... more details to follow soon.

Mark Du Mosch at Tomorrow People, GRV, Edinburgh, 08.09.08

"Tomorrow People welcomes newcomer Mark du Mosch as a special guest on Monday September 8th. The Dutch DJ is in Scotland for a Saturday night guest spot, also his UK DEBUT, at Glasgow's Twisted Wheel (Slabs of The Tabernacle night) and when Slabs resident DJ Andrew Ingram got in touch to say the Dutchman was planning to stay a few days and visit Edinburgh en route back to Rotterdam, it was too good an opportunity to pass up on, so we've invited the Slabs residents to come and join Mark on the decks with us at our weekly night at the GRV and are now royally looking forward to it."
- Hobbes.

Start Time:
Monday, September 8, 2008 at 10:00pm
End Time:
Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 2:00am
Location:
The GRV
Street:
Guthrie Street
City/Town:
Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Tomorrow People

"Kicking things off in the Edinburgh Old Town's hip and happening GRV bar space every Monday night, The Trouble DJs (Hobbes & Erik d'Viking) are trashing the commercial DJing sensibilities and concerns about 'moving the floor' to focus on playing all the really exciting music out there which you haven't heard before or played to death. Come down with an open mind and a willingness to check out something fresh, something different and something genuinely exciting and new.

The Music: Obscure, upfront and unplayed cosmic, italo, boogie and electro disco (beard music!), dubstep, 2-step, b-more, bassline, bootlegs (only the good ones ones!), re-edits, rarities and obscurities, plus the odd minimal and electronic nugget! Advance releases, blog exclusives, promos, downloads etc.
Tomorrow People, we're future-retro. Are you?"

Countach Moustache - All Day Disco Terror

Its time for another all day disco session at the Halt Bar! This time we've pretty much taken over the line-up to make it the official Slabs after-after party and some of our pals from across the country will be joining us.
Casionova takes the magic carpet up from Brighton and Alex Fildes & Nick The Greek take the M6 up from Liverpool.
It'll probably kick off at about 1500 hours and take off early evening.. Keep tight hold of yer headphones!

Thursday 21 August 2008

Friday Night Slabs

Tomorrow night (Friday 22nd) Slabs of the Tabernacle have been given total control of the music selection upstairs in the Twisted Wheel, Queen Street. From 9 o'clock onwards I'll be joining Jonny Wins and residents Ingram & d'Souza for a sound battle till 1am!

The Dogs Bollocks

I found a couple of MiniDiscs the other day of sets I had recorded in France from Erik Rug, The Counter Culture Show (Fat City), DJ Deep and Laurent Garnier.

Garnier began another residency at The Rex Club whilst I was there and named the night 'The Dogs Bollocks'. It was on a Thursday night, started at about midnight and finished whenever he felt like. One set in particular brought back fond memories. This section of the night was recorded 11.01.2001 and was broadcast shortly after on Radio Nova. Once again he delivers yet another great deep house and techno mix.

MARK DU MOSCH
RESIDENTS (ANDREW INGRAM, BRIAN d'SOUZA, HOBBES)

Already at our fifth event, we have hosted Scottish debuts for a number of artists such as The Third Man (ai Records), UK italo pioneer Casionova (Magic Waves, Cyber Dance Records, Dissident) and Mills sound-alike Hek (Rehab, Liverpool). We are now looking further afield by inviting across Rotterdam's Mark du Mosch (Moustache Records) to make his first ever UK appearance.

As soon as we heard his first record "Let It Go" in 2006 on Keynote, Mark became the prime target on the Slabs radar. He makes music that belongs on another galaxy, melodies that sound like they were crafted on the moon, layered with deep spacey synth swooshes that will illuminate any dancefloor.

Slabs @ Radio Magnetic Soundsystem

Our good friends at Radio Magnetic have asked us to come along to the Ivy tomorrow night:

"The Radio Magnetic Soundsystem takes to the clubs once again with a new and invigorated stable of DJ's. The Soundsystem's first port of call will be Glasgow's pub of the moment, The Ivy on Friday 8th August and from there we aim to man the wheels on a monthly basis. The plan is to get through all of the quality DJ's and presenters on our roster so to kick things off we've got Slabs of the Tabernacle and Tony 'The Beat Delivery' playing a fine mix of what they do best."

Selections coming from slabs resident Ingram and myself. We hope to see you there! But do be sure to leave any pets at home!

A recap..

Good times at Slabs 004!

Special thanks goes out to Alex and Nick who made the mission up from Liverpool, to Toby for his warm-up and finally to John who turned the place upside down and into a right sweatbox!

These are two segments taken from the night, The Third Man's live set and Hek's punishing workout.
