THE THIRD MAN
RESIDENTS (ANDREW INGRAM, BRIAN d'SOUZA, HOBBES)

After July’s continental time travel, August sees us get busy with some good old fashioned 4/4. The Third Man (ai Records) makes his return as quarterly resident while Liverpool’s young talent Hek (John Heckle) joins us for the first time.

John plays every month at Liverpool’s Rehab night, with 3 Decks and a 909, rattling his way through tunes like nobody’s business! His sets are illuminated by classic Detroit and acid; Hood-style minimal; and tougher edged Brummy and European sounds.

The Third Man has just had his second release out on ai Records, available from ai records or digitally via the Bleep and Beatport websites and spends most of his time perfecting his Ableton moves. He will be performing an hour live set with loads of tracks off his new LP released this October.

Bumped into Robocop in town a couple of years ago and he was buzzin about having a night off, dancing like a loony and raving on about some mix he'd just made. This is it.

Sausage Sizzle Summer Seven Inch Top Ten

With summer refusing to properly kick in, we thought it'd be an idea to hook up with C-Biscuit (one of the selectors form the mighty Edinburgh soundsystem 'Big Toe's Hi-Fi') to have a rummage through his collection and put together a list of 10 seven inch bangers to help get the summer started in fine style. Yes I Clive!

1. Canada Cold - Peter Metro (Dynamite Records)

"
Weather wise I thought that this would be an apt start to the Scottish summer selection. It was minus 30 when I once went to the other
Banff in the world on a snowboarding holiday so I definitely agree with Mr. Metro. Don't Follow Rumours is the rhythm and the temperature may be below zero but this one gives out some serious heat on the dancefloor....ssssssss!!!"

2. Sound System White Noise - C-Biscuit and Danny Diamond (Big Toe's Hi-
Fi)

"Nothing
like a bit of shameless self-promotion. The soon come 5th release on our own label featuring myself, a singer from Leeds and Edinburgh's very own magician of BASS, Neil Landstrumm on production."

3. One Pure Thought (
Toddla T Remix) - Hot Chip (EMI Records)

"Now then, now then
Toddla mixes ye olde Yorkshire Bleep n' Bass inna Unique 3 stylee with his own signature Digi-Dancehall to give Hot Chip t'necessary edge for a rewind on this. Very happy that the version is on the B-side too, right?"

4. Love
Jah Jah Always - Rod Taylor with The Mighty Diamonds (Ja Man)

"First time I heard a version of this was on one of the Joe Gibbs African Dub
LPs and the sweet refrain has stuck with me all these years."

5. Shoulder Move -
Jah Thomas (Midnight Rock)

"
Jah Thomas does a kind of Reggae Simple Simon Says. You can't help but move your feet to the rhythm pattern and wind your waist to the bassline."

6. Red Wine to Gaze - Sizzla vs. UB40 (Jiggy RMX)

"THE Number One hit matured for 15 years by
Brummie reggae legends then uncorked and re-fixed with Sizzla. Sip and savour."

7. Learn To Drive - Lone Ranger (Dynamite Records)

"This one is a special request to all licensed drivers and no coincidence that the rhythm track is a version of
Unmetered Taxi. Good advice and maybe one day I will take it but at the minute I will stick to riding shotgun in B-Dawg's motor with this as our soundtrack."
8. Zig It Up - Ninja Man & Flourgon (Pickout)

"I also have a Hip-Hop version of this song but the sheer driving simplicity of this Lloyd Dennis
Dancehall production knocks it for six."

9. Good Buddy - Vybz Kartel (South Rakkas Crew)

"Imagine a cross between Booker T and
MGs "Soul Limbo" and an Orbital B-side and you have the Chinkuzi riddim. Vybz up to the time as always gives us his take on summer lovin'. It's just not cricket!"

10.
Dancin Alone - Snow (Massive B)

"Ending with another connection to Canada from the Super Notorious Outrageous
Whiteboy himself. Snow croons about a certain special lady over the Tempo rhythm. Never thought we would have an "erection section" at Big Toe's Hi-Fi but this just may be the slow one to play at the end of the night.."

Thanks to C_Biscuit for putting the list together. Slabs of the Tabernacle are also hoping to host an exclusive Big Toe's guest slab in the near future. We recommend you have a listen through their tracks, some of which you can hear on their myspace and some of which you can buy on their discogs page.
